I don't usually read poetry in my native language, much less have I done it in others. In any case, for what I know of English poetry, my biggest complain is: why the hell doesn't it ever rhyme??? Seriously, all the "greatest authors" of the English language whose poetry I've seen written, never once did they rhyme a single verse with another. Is it art for the sake of art? 'Cause, personally, it looks cheap and boring, it's like saying "hey, I wanna write poetry but I suck at it... well, let's skip over this whole rhyming thing and just write down stuff in funny sentences".

English lenguaje is very simple in structure, but is a powerfull lenguaje. Whitman offers to reader the posibility of understand anglosajon's culture and knowledge. The poetry of Whitman is practical but beautiful.

yeah... I don't think Whitman helps anyone understand anglosaxon culture. For starters, 'cause he's American. I mean, yes, English is a language of anglosaxon ancestry, but that doesn't mean you'll be getting the "taste" of that culture through the expresion of an American, for culture is so much more than the language included in it.

I've been reading random poems from the link you've offered, and well, I pretty much just iterate myself: pretty words in random arrangements, but no rhyme, so this is not poetry for me. Seriously, I don't mean you have to rhyme every freaking single verse in consonant rhyme, but if you're writing poetry, you've gotta throw in some rhyme to help you keep the rhythm!

¿The poetry must has rhythm for you? Whitman is a entry for anglosaxon culture, he is a principal writer in English lenguaje. His poetry offers the posibility of to understand part of anglo culture. Of course, Whitman is from USA, not is "American" like you say, So I feel than Whitman is more than poetry is a world writer with many ideas and different concept of poetry.  But you have reason, one writer is insufficient for understand all anglo culture.

Indeed it has. I was wondering if that was just an assumption of mine, but the definition the Thesaurus (English language's most important dictionary) says "expressive, rythmic literary work". So yeah, it must have rythm to be called poetry. If it's just a casual arrangement of words, then call it "experimental narrative" or something wacky like that, but not poetry. And this goes not only for English, but for pretty much any language.

BTW, Whitman is American because the USA never developed its own demonym. In Spanish we call them "estadounidenses", but they do not have such word or anything similar to it (that I know of, of that they are aware of, I reckon). American it's their demonym... despite the obnoxious self-US-centered idea that name gives, I know.
